A memorial now sits in the alley between 25th and 26th avenues near 67th Street where Deonte White of Zion, Ill., died over the weekend.
A memorial of candles and balloons marks the spot in a Kenosha alley where a Zion, Ill., man was killed early Sunday.
A rosary hangs from the stockade fence over the memorial several feet from orange police stickers marking spots where bullets struck the wood.
Kenosha Police have identified the victim as Deonte White, 27.
The shooting happened at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday in the alley south of 67th Street between 25th and 26th avenues. The alley is lined by residential properties.
“The investigation remains very active at this time,” the Kenosha Police Department said in a prepared statement Monday. “Presently, the police department does not believe there is any further danger to members of the community.”
Residents of the neighborhood reported being awakened by the sound of gunfire. People reported hearing eight to 10 shots. A fence and garage just north of where White’s body was found were marked by bullet holes.
Heard gunshots
Marla Rowe’s home backs up on the alley. She said that, while the neighborhood is generally safe, she has heard what she suspected was gunfire in the past.
“This time there was no question that it was gunshots, and it was so loud it sounded like it was in our own house,” Rowe said. “I was in shock. I couldn’t even move. And then I called 911 and I was trying to give them the address but my voice was shaking so bad.”
Another person who was staying with family at a home adjacent to the alley reported the family was awoken by the sound of gunfire.
Died at the scene
White died at the scene. Rowe said his body remained in the alley until well after dawn, with the alley taped off as police investigated.
Kenosha Police were releasing little information on the investigation.
After police responded to the call of gunfire, police were pursuing a silver SUV south from the area and the vehicle was at one point on the Kenosha County Bike Trail headed south toward Pleasant Prairie. Police did not comment on whether that was related to the shooting.
Police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting to call the Kenosha Police Department Detective Bureau at 262-605-5203. Callers who wish to remain anonymous can call Kenosha Area Crime Stoppers at 262-656-7333.
