An Antioch, Ill., man drove around a “road closed” barricade on Fox River Road in Wheatland before his pickup truck slid into the Fox River Friday morning, leading to a rescue by emergency crews.

A portion of Fox River Road (Highway W) was closed last month by county officials. Erosion had eaten away at the river bank near the road, making the roadway unsafe.

Sgt. Christopher Hannah of the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department said the 49-year-old man drove around the barricades at about 10:15 a.m.

“Somehow he was trying to turn around and drove into the river,” Hannah said, the incident happening in the 7600 block of Fox River Road south of Highway 50.

Hannah said there is a steep slope from the road to the river in that area, the ground dropping about 15 to 20 feet.

He said there were multiple 911 calls about the driver in the river, including from a nearby construction crew.

“The truck was partially submerged,” Hannah said. “The driver exited the truck himself, but was still in the water when deputies arrived.”

According to police scanner reports, the man was holding onto the outside of the truck. The man was pulled out of the water at 10:27 a.m., Hannah said.
