PADDOCK LAKE — The Walk You Socks Off for Wellness challenge, started about eight years ago in Paddock Lake, is being expanded to include all of Kenosha County.

“We have realized some positive health benefits from walking and thought it would be good to get people from the whole county involved,” said Carolyn Poole of Paddock Lake.

She said the rules of the challenge are simple. Teams of four to 10 walkers log their miles each month, May through August.

The team with the most miles (averaged per the number of walkers on the team) wins the traveling Stinky Shoe trophy — which is actually made out of a used shoe.

“They can walk wherever they want, whenever they want,” Carolyn said. “They log their miles and turn them in monthly.”

There are incentive prizes for the individual who logs the most miles each month in each group. The “top walker” overall is also recognized when the challenge is complete.

“There is no cost to be involved,” Carolyn said, adding she gets prize donations from area businesses.

Poole’s husband John Poole, a Kenosha County Board supervisor, has been spreading the word about the challenge at area municipal meetings.

“It promotes health and community,” John said. “It would be nice if we could get people walking all over the county, in parks and on trails.”

Carolyn said no group walks are planned at the moment. But, if those who register are interested, they can be planned.
