Popular hot dog diner feeds families in need

For Samantha and Rickey Edwards of Kenosha, a stress-free dinner at a popular downtown gyro and hot dog diner couldn’t have come on a better day.

The couple and their five kids were among the hundreds who paid a visit Sunday to Trolley Dogs, 5501 Sixth Ave., that each year sponsors the free “dine out” event.

The Edwards family enjoyed Italian beef combo sandwiches, hot dogs, fries and fruity slushies, among other menu items.

“The food is excellent,” said Samantha Edwards, who found out about the event through the Salvation Army’s toy program, which her children registered for earlier this season.

The event is restaurant owner James Shehadeh’s way to give back to the community. The event is in it sixth year, and this year he distributed about 400 tickets to local groups that serve individuals and families in need through Shalom Center, Salvation Army of Kenosha and ELCA Urban Outreach Center.

Fave Five: Reporter Terry Flores

As the year draws to a close, the Kenosha News is taking a look back on 2019 and sharing the favorite five stories that each of our reporters has written this year.

Here are the Fave Five stories of Kenosha News reporter Terry Flores.

Despite Sunday’s cold and sleet, the restaurant saw a steady stream of customers with both dine-in and to-go orders.

“We’re hoping to serve everybody, and 400 (people); that’s the goal,” he said.

In years past, the program also featured socks and undergarment drives, something he hopes to revive next year.

“We’d like to be able to do that again, too,” he said.

Robert Longstreet and his nephew Robert Mosley, both of Kenosha, had never been to the restaurant before and were appreciative of the meal. Both ordered the Italian beef.

“The food here is wonderful,” said Longstreet.

He said he was impressed with Shehadeh’s initiative to help people in need and plans to visit again.

“I’m going to come back for more because he is dedicating this for the people, and I’m going to dedicate it back to him,” he said. “This is good what he’s doing, wonderful what he’s doing for the community.”
