Coordinating an 11-day cycling series through the streets of southeast Wisconsin is by no means an easy task.

Just ask Tour of America’s Dairyland executive director Bill Koch.

“There is a tremendous amount of dynamics involved in planning,” Koch said. “Finding the times and dates and locations and getting the races permitted takes a lot of work. You have to deal with each city and its infrastructure and organize cooperation with the police department, fire department, department of public works ... Everyone has to work together to make sure the dates work and they can pull it off with staffing and other things.”

11th annual tour

The 11th annual Tour of America’s Dairyland kicks off at 11 a.m. Thursday in Library Park. It’s the main attraction of the 26th Food, Folks & Spokes, which features all-day cycling, all-day entertainment and a variety of local food vendors.

The tour begins in Kenosha before heading to East Troy (June 21), Grafton (June 22), Waukesha (June 23), West Bend (June 24), Janesville (June 25), Muskego (June 26), Shorewood (June 27), Bay View (June 28), Downer Avenue (June 29) and Wauwatosa (June 30).

“We’re thrilled to kick things off in Kenosha,” Koch said. “We appreciate being welcomed back.”

Road closures planned

The event will take place in the area in and around Library Park. Motorists should be mindful of road closures that will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m to accommodate the event.

In order for the event to take place uninterrupted, Eighth and Seventh avenues will be closed between 58th Street and 62nd Street. 58th Street will be closed off between Eighth and Seventh avenues. 59th Street will be closed off from Sheridan Road to Seventh Avenue; and 60th Street will also be closed from Sheridan Road to approximately Sixth Avenue, according to a map provided by the Kenosha YMCA for the event.

A portion of 61st Street between Seventh and Eighth avenues will also be closed during the event.

Food, Folks & Spokes takes place rain or shine. Last year’s event went on despite a steady rain from start to finish.
