New Pleasant Prairie Fire Chief Craig Roepke

Craig S. Roepke was recently named chief of Pleasant Prairie’s fire and rescue department.

The Pleasant Prairie Police and Fire Commission has named department veteran Craig S. Roepke as the new chief of the village’s fire and rescue department.

Roepke has been with the department since 1982. He served as a paid-on-call member of the department, and as paid-on-call lieutenant and captain until 2009, when he became a full time “firemedic.”

He was promoted to deputy chief in 2012 and has been serving as interim chief since the May retirement of Chief Doug McElmury. Although village officials ultimately chose a local candidate, they did a wider search.

Candidates were interviewed by a three-member panel, including Chief Mike Slover of the Salem Fire Department, Chief Jeff Steingart of the Countryside Fire Protection District and Chief Mark Kirschhoffer of Newport Township Fire Protection District. Candidates were then presented to the Police and Fire Commission for their consideration.

Carol Willke, director of human resources for Pleasant Prairie, said, “Craig’s technical experience and leadership skills will be an asset to the department as it continues to provide high-quality fire and rescue services to residents, businesses and visitors in Pleasant Prairie.”
