With the open enrollment deadline coming up on December 15, WisconsinEye Senior Producer Steve Walters sat down with Wisconsin Department of Health Services Secretary-Designee Andrea Palm and UW-Madison Institute for Research on Poverty's Health Policy Programs Director Donna Friedsam to discuss the state of the Affordable Care Act in Wisconsin. In response to U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin's warning against "junk insurance plans," Sec.-Designee Palm echoed that they are a concern for Wisconsinites seeking insurance outside of the ACA Marketplace. "If you go to healthcare.gov, if you get connected with a legitimate navigator through 211, they're not going to sell you a junk plan." Sen. Baldwin's press release also highlighted that these "junk plans" do not include coverage for prescription drugs, emergency room visits, or maternity care. Sec.-Designee Palm encouraged those participating in the Marketplace to call 211 to get connected with a certified health insurance navigator to help with the process.
