Representative Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee), Senator LaTonya Johnson (D-Milwaukee), and other legislative partners hosted a legislative briefing on the topic of "Ending Qualified Immunity." According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, "the doctrine of qualified immunity protects state and local officials, including law enforcement officers, from individual liability unless the official violated a clearly established constitutional right." In this segment, Rep. Brostoff highlighted Assembly Bill 186 which relates to eliminating public official immunity as a defense to civil liability claims against law enforcement officers and prohibiting indemnification for judgments against law enforcement officers. Followed by Rep. Brostoff, Terry Blevins, former law enforcement officer and panelist in the briefing, cited a recent poll reported that 63 percent of Americans support the elimination of qualified immunity. Blevins also explained that, "qualified immunity protects problematic police officers...all while squandering limited public safety resources."
