The Milwaukee Press Club hosted two of the core organizers for the recent protests in the Milwaukee area in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Khalil Coleman and Destiny Monae took a question from James Causey, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter, on defunding the police when the Milwaukee Police Department is seeking a 6 percent increase to their budget. Coleman talked about the consistent increases in police budgets over the years without a decrease in crime or an increase in conflict resolution between police and community tensions. "We understand as a people that more money in policing does not equal more solutions," Coleman said highlighting that defunding the police out of Milwaukee Public Schools was a small victory. "The money that police departments are getting to operate in school systems are money that can go towards social workers and counselors for emotional behavioral learning, or can go to conflict resolution classes inside of the school to teach young people how to deal with conflict."
