WisEye Morning Minute: WI Senate Unveils Amended COVID-19 Bill
The Senate Committee on Senate Organization approved a pared down version of the COVID-19 bill which eliminates several provisions in last week's Assembly approved bill and includes several items from Gov. Tony Evers' bill released last month. However, some items in the bill may be a point of contention for the governor including legal protections for businesses and other entities that don't follow government requirements regarding COVID-19. Kristine Hillmer, president of the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, testified in support saying, "Our industry has become a major fall guy for this pandemic, which also makes us a major target for frivolous lawsuits over exposure to COVID-19." Dave Heide, Madison restaurant owner, testified in opposition saying, "I need your help actually protecting our restaurants, not just trying to project us from litigation, but trying to help and support us with grants and funds to help us get through this."
