The owner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is late on paying property taxes on its downtown buildings, the newspaper reported Wednesday.

Gannett Co. owes $24,997 in back taxes on the property and is working to pay it off, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

"The company pays its property taxes in 10 monthly installments for the Journal Sentinel buildings at 333 W. State St.," the newspaper reported. "Most of those payments have been made on time, with the last installment due at the end of October, according to city records."

Gannett, publisher of USA Today and hundreds of other daily and weekly newspapers, is in the process of being purchased by GateHouse Media. They are the two largest newspaper companies in the U.S.

“We believe this transaction will create value for our shareholders, greater opportunities for our employees, and a stronger future for journalism," the companies announced in an August news release. "Gannett is an innovative, digitally-focused media and marketing solutions company with well-known brands worldwide."

The Journal Sentinel also reported that a sale is pending with local developers for its downtown buildings.
