Oct. 2 is the 150th anniversary of the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. In honor of Mahatma Gandhi's life and legacy, Oct. 2 is commemorated in India as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday, and around the world as the International Day of Nonviolence. Here are some key dates from his life.
Gandhi is born in Porbandar, a city in the Gujarat province of northwestern India.
Marriage to Kasturba Makhanji
May 1883: Gandhi is married, at age 13, to 14-year-old Kasturba Makhanji in an arranged union.
September 1888-June 1891: Gandhi travels to the United Kingdom to study law at University College, London.
Returns to India
1891: Gandhi returns to India with his law degree, where he struggles to establish a legal practice.
