He made disparaging remarks about Syrian refugees, labeling them poisoned Skittles. He compared the proposed border wall to a zoo with bars to prevent illegals from getting through. If you’re thinking this is Trump Speak you’d be correct, only it’s not Donald Sr. but rather Donald Jr. spewing this fear-mongering rhetoric.
This unwarranted bashing also occurred at a border wall rally in El Paso, Texas. With daddy sitting on stage, all smiles, Donald Jr. told the youngsters in attendance, “You don’t have to be indoctrinated by those loser teachers that are trying to sell you on socialism from birth.”
It’s hard to fathom why teachers have joined the media as conveyors of fake subject matter. Is it possible librarians will be the next perceived enemy?
Having been an educator, I take personal offense with Junior’s portrayal of teachers. The sign outside Wilson Elementary displays the words Respect, Perseverance and Integrity, reassuring passersby that the teachers are providing a wholesome environment that’s focused on self-worth and student appreciation of the similarities and differences of those around them.
Those teachers also have curricular activities that allow youngsters to develop the skills needed to become critical thinkers. I was fortunate to hear the famous cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead speak at Beloit College, one memorable quote being, “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” Amen to that.
I can only guess what’s caused Donald Jr. to think like his father. Possibly the answer can be found by googling “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught.” Read it and see if you don’t agree with me that the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
