State's best on display this weekend

The state’s best senior boys and girls basketball players will be on display this weekend at the annual Wisconsin Basetball Coaches Association All-Star Games at the JustAGame Field House in Wisconsin Dells.

And both the Division-1 boys and girls games will have a local flavor.

Former Bradford star De’Monte Nelson and former Indian Trail standout Kendall Wilhelmson will compete on the Division-1 South squads.

Wilhelmson and her South teammates will face the Division-1 North in the final game Friday at 4 p.m., while Nelson will take the floor Saturday at 4 p.m.

Action in the two-day event tips off Friday at 9 a.m. with the Division-5 girls game, followed by Divison-4 at 10:45, Division-3 at 12:30 p.m., Division-2 at 2:15 and Division-1.

The boys will follow the same schedule Saturday.

Nelson put together one of the top scoring seasons in Kenosha County history this past season with at least 20 points in 22 of Bradford’s 24 games. He finished his senior year with a 28.7 scoring average, 3.5 rebounds per game, 3 assists, 2 steals, shot 46.8 percent from the field, 39 percent from 3-point range and 81.7 percent from the free-throw line.

The Southeast Conference’s scoring champion had 30 points or more 10 times and 40 or more twice, including a career-high 41 against Wilmot on Jan. 2. He was named Co-SEC Player of the Year, Associated Press All-State Honorable Mention and WBCA Division-1 All-State Honorable Mention.

Wilhelmson had a solid senior season in her own right.

For the year, she averaged 23 points a game, 6.2 rebounds, 3.9 steals, 2.2 assists, 2.1 blocks and made 32 3-pointers.

The All-SEC first-team pick tripled her scoring output from her junior year.

Racine Horlick’s Marcus Caldwell will join Nelson as the other SEC representative, while Wilhelmson is joined by the Oak Creek duo of Haley Zylka and Kassandra Bartek.
