The Carthage men’s basketball team was picked to finish fourth in the nine-team College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin preseason coaches poll, which was released last week.
The Red Men received 42 points, behind third-place Illinois Wesleyan’s 47.
Carthage is trying to bounce back from last season, when it went 8-17 overall and 3-13 in the CCIW to finish eighth in the conference.
Defending CCIW Tournament champion North Central topped the preseason coaches poll with 63 points and seven first-place votes.
The Cardinals were ranked No. 3 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, as they’re coming off their fourth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.
Augustana, ranked No. 17 in the national poll, was picked to finish second in the CCIW with 56 points and two first-place votes. The Vikings won their fifth straight CCIW regular-season title and 18th overall last season and made a sixth consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance.
Rounding out the preseason poll behind Carthage were Elmhurst (35 points), Wheaton (31), Carroll and Millikin (21 apiece) and North Park (eight).
The Red Men open their season at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Beloit at Tarble Arena.
Reds picked third
The Carthage women’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the nine-team CCIW in the preseason coaches poll, released last week.
The Reds went 17-10 overall and 10-6 in the CCIW last season to finish third in the standings and make their second straight CCIW Conference Tournament.
Defending conference champion Wheaton, ranked No. 14 in the D3hoops.com preseason poll, was picked to defend its title with 64 points and eight first-place votes.
The Thunder made their fifth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament last season.
Illinois Wesleyan, which won the national championship in 2012, was picked to finish second in the CCIW with 55 points and one first-place vote.
Rounding out the preseason poll behind Carthage were North Park (33 points), Augustana (30), North Central (29), Elmhurst (26), Millikin (22) and Carroll (13).
The Reds open their season 1 p.m. Saturday against Calvin (Mich.) at Tarble Arena.
CCIW honors Villa
Carthage junior defensive lineman Gabe Villa was named the CCIW Defensive Player of the Week for football, it was announced Monday.
Villa, a native of Naperville, Ill., set career highs in four statistical categories in Carthage’s 46-14 win over North Park on Saturday at Art Keller Field. Villa had five solo tackles, five for loss totaling minus-23 yards, three sacks totaling minus-19, and four forced fumbles.
Illinois Wesleyan senior quarterback Johnny Dicanio was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Washington University junior Will Hurley was named the Special Teams Player of the Week.
Carthage plays at Wheaton in a CCIW contest 1 p.m. Saturday.
