Carthage juniors Sarah Schmidt and Elizabeth Willis on Monday were named to the 2019 United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division III All-Midwest Team.
The honor is the third straight for Schmidt, who will make her fourth Division III national meet appearance later this week. She’s currently ranked 18th in the shot put with a toss of 13.58 meters at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Indoor Championships.
Schmidt is 11th in the weight throw with a distance of 17.07 meters that she recorded at the UW-Oshkosh Early Bird Invitational.
Willis, who is on the All-Region team for the second straight year, won the CCIW indoor shot put title at 13.93 meters and the weight throw crown at 18.04. She will make her third national meet appearance and currently is ranked third in the weight throw and eighth in the shot put.
Schmidt and Willis, along with the 1,600 meter relay team of David Rogers, Ronny Onano, Dane Rasmussen and Michael Schantek, will represent Carthage at the national indoor meet Friday and Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, Mass.
The women’s weight throw event is set for Friday at 3:15 p.m., while the 1,600 relay preliminary race is at 7:25 p.m. On Saturday, the women’s shot put event begins at 10 a.m., with the relay finals at 4:25 p.m.
Carthage’s relay team qualified with a time of 3:16.63 at the CCIW Indoor meet, which ranks them 10th. The national trip is the first for all four athletes.
