Local briefs: Carthage women's volleyball receives preseason votes


Reds receive votes in preseason poll

The Carthage women’s volleyball team earned 82 points in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Preseason Coaches Poll, released Wednesday afternoon.

Carthage landed just outside the top 25 in 27th.

The Reds, who host their first home match of the season Wednesday, Sept. 11, were picked by College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin coaches to finish first this season in the CCIW.

Carthage hires new wrestling coach

Alberto Quiros has been hired as Carthage’s next men’s wrestling coach and the school’s first-ever women’s wrestling coach, Athletic Director Michelle Manning announced Thursday.

Quiros spent the last two seasons as the head men’s and women’s coach at MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. Prior to building both programs there from scratch, he was an assistant at Augustana College.

During his senior year at Augustana, Quiros won a CCIW title, was named Outstanding Wrestler of the Year, was a runner-up in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and qualified for the Division III National Tournament.

Quiros graduated from Augustana with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and history.

Softball meeting Monday at Bullen

A parent meeting for all Bullen Middle School girls in sixth- through eighth-grade interested in playing softball this fall will be held Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at Bullen.

Any girl who attends a KUSD school and lives within the Bullen boundary is eligible to play.
