Gymnasts from Burlington/Badger/Wilmot Combined and Kenosha Combined accounted for four of the top five spots in the all-around competition Saturday at the Emerald Classic in Waterford.
B/B/W’s Maddy Bronson was the all-around champion with a score of 36.75, Kenosha’s Maggie Losch was second (35.725), B/B/W’s Malia Bronson placed third (35.025) and Kenosha’s Megan Zeller was fifth (34.95).
Maddy Bronson won the uneven bars (9.5) and the vault (9.35) and was fifth in the floor exercise (9.1), while Malia Bronson placed third both on the balance beam (9.375) and in the floor exercise (9.3).
Losch, meanwhile, was fourth in the vault (8.85), tied for sixth on the uneven bars (8.9) and was sixth in the floor exercise (9.075). Zeller’s top finish was a fifth-place score in the vault (8.8).
Other top-five finishes by locals came from B/B/W’s Reagan Cassidy on the balance beam (fourth, 9.325), Kenosha’s Angelina Riley on the balance beam (fifth, 9.275) and Kenosha’s Grace Corcoran in the floor exercise (9.2).
In the team standings, B/B/W was second among the eight entrants with a score of 141.25, while Kenosha placed third (140.475). The Franklin Co-op team won with a total of 145.125.
South Milwaukee Invitational
Junior Andrew Knudtson finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle to lead Tremper to seventh place in the 12-team South Milwaukee Invitational.
The Trojans tallied 121 points, followed by Bradford (76) in 10th place and Indian Trail (29) in 12th. Indian Trail only participated in diving, while the rest of the team competed in the Marquette Invitational.
Muskego easily won the meet with 446 points, 121 ahead of runner-up Waukesha West/Mukwonago. Lake Geneva Badger Combined, which includes swimmers from Central and Wilmot, placed third with 314.
Knudtson finished the 100 freestyle in 55.83 seconds. Evan Gerold placed third for Badger Combined in 52.73 and took fifth in the 50 freestyle in 23.88.
Tremper’s Justin Rummelhart finished sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:16.13.
Matt Krug sparked Bradford with eighth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:02.08) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.56). Bryce Braya-Weyrauch took ninth place in the 50 freestyle in 25.18.
Divers Nathan Hill (276.05) and Jake Weber (273.8) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Hawks.
Indian Trail finished 13th at the 23-team Marquette Invitational in Brown Deer.
Led by junior Taylor Johnson, the Hawks scored 63 points. Madison West coasted to first place with 357 points. Middleton, Waukesha South Co-op, Franklin and Chicago Fenwick rounded out the top five.
Johnson turned in the Hawks’ top individual performance by finishing fifth in the 500-yard freestyle in 4 minutes, 54.22 seconds.
Johnson also took 11th in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.59 and teamed with juniors Austin Johnson, junior Evan Weiss and freshman Josh Cao to finish ninth in the 200 medley relay in 1:44.53.
Cao (2:05.54) and Austin Johnson (2:07.87) finished 11th and 14th, respectively, in the 200 individual medley.
Weiss took 12th-place in the 100 backstroke in 57.21, and sophomore Ben Wirch finished 12th in the 500 freestyle in 5:07.77 for the Hawks.
HOPE Christian 68, Christian Life 15
Playing without two starters, the visiting Eagles struggled in the Midwest Classic Conference road loss.
Christian Life (3-5, 1-3) was without Alayna Smith, who played the last three-and-a-half games with a broken wrist, and Alyssa Jouett.
Adeline Fredrick led Christian Life with six points and four rebounds, followed by Kaila Woods with five points and seven rebounds. Khloe Pulkstenis and Vivian Onedo each pulled down three rebounds for the Eagles.
