Series note: The Spartans have won the last three meetings by a combined score of 136-18. … Martin Luther romped to a 67-12 victory last year at Shoreland in Week 5. Then-senior Darios Crawley-Reid rushed for 215 yards and three TDs on just eight attempts for the Spartans and also returned two kickoffs for TDs. … The Pacers' last win in the series was by a 44-22 score in 2015, the season Shoreland advanced to the WIAA Division-5 state semifinals.
Player to watch: After missing last week's game due to illness, Shoreland senior wide receiver/defensive back Eric Gowens (6-0, 165 pounds) is back. ... "We've had a rash of illnesses the last two weeks, and Eric was hit hard enough that he couldn't play last week," Shoreland coach Paul Huebner said. "He's back and healthy this week, which is important for us against Martin Luther's talented perimeter players. Eric is another example of a senior who has grown and matured a ton since he joined the program as a freshman. Every year he has improved his strength and his speed and is now a solid varsity competitor."
Key stat: The Spartans were ground-heavy with Crawley-Reid last season, but this year, 6-2, 165-pound junior quarterback Brady Hoppert is 62-for-103 (60.2 percent) through the air for 883 yards with 11 TDs and two INTs.
