Three athletes from the Carthage men’s and women’s track and field team qualified for the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships, the school announced Saturday.
Aaron Austin (discus) will represent the Carthage men, while Sarah Schmidt (shot put, discus, hammer throw) and Elizabeth Willis (shot put, discus, hammer throw) will represent the Carthage women Thursday through Saturday at the Spire Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio.
Austin enters the meet ranked 18th in the discus with a throw of 50.35 meters, achieved at the Augustana Meet of Champions on April 18.
Austin, a sophomore from Chicago, won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin outdoor discus title (48.22) and the outdoor shot put title (15.08).
Schmidt, a a junior from Darwin, Minn., will make her third straight nationals appearance, as she’s qualified three times in the discus and twice each in the shot put and hammer throw. She earned All-American honors in the shot put with a seventh-place mark of 13.94 at last year’s outdoor nationals.
This year, Schmidt ranks eighth in the shot put after a toss of 14.29 at the Augustana Twilight on Thursday, 13th in the discus after a throw of 45.18 at the Augustana Meet of Champions on April 18 and 18th in the hammer with a mark of 52.51 at the Augustana Meet of Champions.
Willis, a junior from Mendota, Ill., finished 11th at outdoor nationals in the shot put (13.39) last year and will make her first appearance at outdoor nationals in the discus and hammer this year.
She enters ranked sixth in the discus after a throw of 46.51 at the Augustana Meet of Champions on April 18, seventh in the shot put after a mark of 14.3 at the Augustana Meet of Champions and 10th in the hammer after a throw of 53.42 at the Carroll Open on April 13.
