UW-Parkside wrestlers Pernevlon Sheppard and Connor Price will represent the Rangers at the NCAA Division II Championships today and Saturday in Cleveland.
Sheppard, a redshirt junior from Glendale Heights, Ill., placed third at 149 pounds in the Central Regionals in Moorhead, Minn., on Feb. 23 to earn his third trip to nationals.
Price, a redshirt senior from Muskego, secured his first trip to nationals with a second-place finish at 174 pounds in the Central Regionals.
At 149 pounds in the national draw, Sheppard (5-6) will face Limestone’s Matthew Rose (13-6) in a “wrestle-in” match this morning, with the winner facing Newman’s Kameron Frame (18-3).
Frame, ranked No. 6 at 149 according to InterMat Wrestling, earned a bye and awaits either Sheppard or Rose today. The winner of that match will square off tonight against either second-ranked James Pleski (25-1) of St. Cloud State or 11th-ranked Chase Clasen (17-5) of Chadron State.
Pleski defeated Sheppard by a 4-2 decision in the opening match at regionals.
In the 174-pound draw, Price (17-7) faces Colorado School of Mines’ Robert Gambrill (18-3) this morning.
Likely awaiting the winner of that match tonight is top-ranked Brandon Supernaw (16-0) of Western Colorado, who received a first-round bye and will face the winner of the “wrestle-in” match.
The placement matches in each weight class will be held Saturday.
